Whew! It’s been a while. I’ve been working on a project that’s taken me A LOT longer than I thought it would. That’s how it usually goes though, right? What I thought would take two weeks turned into one month. Excuses, excuses. Anyway…I’mmm back and I have a recipe to share!
We recently had a breakfast for our small group at church and this fruit salad was a hit. A friend asked me for the recipe so I thought it’d share it with y’all too.
This fruit salad was actually introduced to me a few years ago by another sweet friend and I have been making it ever since. It’s perfect for summer!
Usually if I have to take a dish somewhere, I’ll take my brown rice. More recently, as in the hotter months of summer, I’ve been taking fruit. Whether it’s for an appetizer & dessert gathering or a brunch, you can’t go wrong with fruit, right? This fruit salad is one step up from just spreading fruit on a tray (although there’s nothing wrong with that!), but still just as easy.
There’s really no “recipe” and you can pretty much use whatever fruit you’d like. I used blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, and red and white grapes. Side note – why are they called “white” grapes when they are actually green in color? If anyone knows, please leave a comment. I suppose I could just Google it, but I’d rather hear from y’all!
ANYWAY, what makes this fruit salad unique is the secret surprise ingredient….
Basil.
Who would think to add basil to fruit salad? It’s delicious though and adds this wonderful pop of green. You also add lime juice, a little honey, and poppy seeds.
Please note, you can use however much fruit you would like and in any combination/ratio. It really doesn’t have to be exact. I like to make sure the color is “balanced”, but I’m OCD like that. 😉 Also, use basil, poppy seeds, and honey to taste. I used six large basil leaves, but it was from our garden so it was a little more potent than basil you would normally get at the grocery store.
This would be a great fruit salad to make if you had lots of fruit on hand from one of those u-pick farms. I think blueberries are about to be in season. This is also a shameless excuse to share a pic of my kid.
We went strawberry picking a couple months ago. C’mon though…it’s super cute, right? 😉 Also, if you’re liking that black serving bowl, it’s from the Hearth & Hand line at Target. It’s the perfect size.
Ingredients:
2 cups grapes
1 cup pineapple (sliced)
3 cups strawberries (sliced)
2 cups blueberries
lime
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
2-3 tablespoons honey
5-6 basil leaves
Directions:
- Wash and dry fruit.
- Slice strawberries and pineapple. I slice the grapes in half too (#momlife), but it’s not necessary.
- Combine all fruit.
- Squeeze juice from 1/2 lime.
- Add in honey and stir to coat fruit.
- Sprinkle with poppy seeds.
Note:
You can use however much fruit you would like. It really doesn’t have to be exact. Also, use basil, poppy seeds, and honey to taste.
Hope y’all enjoy this fresh summer treat! Let me know if you make it (and if you know about the whole white/green grape thing).
