Hey there! Happy fall y’all!
Have you seen the deep jewel tone colors that are in this fall? I love that dark cranberry / deep purple color and knew that I wanted to add a touch of it somewhere. This fall centerpiece was the perfect place for it!
I used one of my favorite containers that I thrifted for $5. It’s just an old wooden box, but I love how rustic it is (check out those dovetail edges!) and the height is perfect for a table centerpiece.
Here are some step-by-steps and a few tricks to use. Let’s get started!
Supplies you’ll need:
- Long container – a tray, box, crate, or even a dough bowl would work. I thrifted mine, but here’s a good dough bowl option.
- Floral foam
- Floral wire cutters
- Faux hydrangea stems
- Pumpkins – different shapes/textures large green, small green, small white, and small natural fiber (couldn’t find them online, but I got these at Hobby Lobby)
- Small filler flower or berries
- Faux sunflowers
- Faux moss
Step 1 – the floral foam goes in the bottom of your tray / bowl / box.
Step 2 – place your large pieces (pumpkins) first.
Step 3 – start filling in with your larger flowers – sunflowers and hydrangea. Make sure to break up your colors and textures. Spread them out over your container.
Step 4 – continue filling in any holes or openings with your filler flower stems.
Step 5 – You’ve been doing a lot of tucking up until this point, but right now you want to gently fluff all your pieces so it doesn’t look so tight. This gives it a much more natural look.
It’s really like making a bed – a lot of tucking & then fluffing! (Don’t get those two words mixed up. You’ll laugh out loud. 😉 )
Step 6 – Tuck in some moss as a “base filler” to fill in any small holes. Make sure to tuck in the moss especially on the edges and at the corners. It really gives it a finished look and helps soften any edges.
* Optional * – I went outside and snipped a few yard cuttings of loropetalum (had to look that one up) to give it a bit more whimsy. Mixing real and faux is a great way to camouflage faux pieces. Obviously, the real ones won’t last as long, but they are easy enough to replace and will certainly last through at least one meal. 😉
I loved how the color palette turned out! It’s perfect on my dining table with a simple table runner!
Remember these tips:
- Tip 1 – choose some floral stems that you can break apart into smaller pieces. More bang for your buck.
- Tip 2 – start with your largest pieces first, then fill in from there.
- Tip 3 – always break up your colors, textures, sizes, and elements.
- Tip 4 – tuck & fluff!
- Tip 5 – fill in at the corners and edges for a finished look.
- Tip 6 – mix in some real cuttings.
Go ahead and gather some supplies, make your own, and remember to tuck & fluff! 😉 Feel free to grab the image above and save it to your Pinterest boards for future reference.
As always, thank you for being here!
