Oh, hey January 31. That was quick! It has basically taken me all of January to think on and brainstorm my house goals for 2020. Not that there’s any shortage of projects, I’m just trying to prioritize. 🙂
I love making goals and plans, but often times I find myself being too ambitious. Probably underestimating just how much is involved even in the smallest of projects. I mean, I love Chip & Joanna Gaines and all, but let’s be real…this is not Fixer Upper! Things take time, money, and resources…and probably more than what one might think. Am I right?
We have a “master list” of house projects – doesn’t everyone – and we usually tackle at least one or two major ones each year in addition to lots of other smaller ones like refinishing a piece of furniture or decorating a space.
Last year wasn’t as productive on the “house projects” front because Misha was in licensing school and I was soooo pregnant. We did renovate the bedroom that is now Evan’s nursery and I’m super happy with how it turned out.

This year, in keeping with my “word of the year”, which is FOCUS, I have decided to focus on just ONE house project each month.
It can be anything from organizing to decorating to remodeling, but just ONE project. Not even one room, but just one project. If I do more than that – great. If not, no big deal. I still accomplished what I set out to do.
It may sound kind of small and slow, but I’m just keeping it real around here! Not continuously putting pressure on myself to try and do ALL the things on my list. Just giving myself the time and space so I don’t feel overwhelmed and lose my focus. At least that’s the idea. Also, just taking it a few months at a time and not planning too far ahead. I’ll re-evaluate every three months. Soooo…
Here are my house goals for 2020:
>>> fair warning…there are lots of before pics! 😉 <<<
1. Master Bedroom
The space is not terrible, but it’s not great. We just need some refreshes in here such as:
- paint an accent wall
- paint/refinish armoire
- refinish bedside table
- definitely a new light fixture
- new bedding

2. Patio + walkway
This one is pretty self-explanatory and is one of our major, larger-scale (i.e. more expensive) projects for this year. We want to bust up the existing “broken tile” and repave it with brick.

3. Kitchen
There are several updates in here that would make a huge impact. Most importantly, getting rid of this orange/terracotta tile:

It’s got to go.
- add banquette
- repaint island
- replace cabinet hardware
- new backsplash – it’s bead board now, which isn’t terrible, but I want subway tile.
- flooring – we’re talking painting the existing tile or either installing something OVER it.
- new kitchen table
*** Bonus – not 100% necessary, but it would be so nice to replace our stove/oven and kitchen sink.
4. Dining room
Just a small update in here with a larger rug and refinishing the chairs.
5. Living room
- new floor lamp (done! Came in yesterday!)
- new chairs
- add fireplace + built-ins – this one is a biggie. Probably our other major project for the year.

My focus for the next three months:
As you can see, there are plenty of projects within these general areas, so these will be my focus for the next three months.
January – patio
We’ve had lots of contractors out in the last few weeks looking at our larger scale projects. I’m so excited that we are actually kicking off the year with one of the biggies – the patio!!!!!!
The contractor was in between large jobs and told us if we did the demo ourselves and started the project THIS WEEK, that he would knock off half the price. Um, yes please. I was out there with a shovel within minutes. The paving prep is happening as I write this. #exciting

I will be sharing about everything in my stories on Instagram. I’d love to have you following along over there! Of course, I’ll be writing a full post here about that project when it’s completed.
February – kitchen banquette
We are adding a banquette in this corner of the kitchen that’s underutilized and just wasted space. It’ll provide extra seating and drawer storage underneath. That’s essential in a smaller home with kids!

March – dining chairs
Hopefully, there will be some warmer days in March that I can get outside and sand down our dining chairs.
That should be enough to get me started, right? 😉 Do you have any house goals this year? Or do you want to see a tutorial for any particular project? Tell me in the comments!
So glad you’re here!

Love the banquette idea! Can’t wait to cozy up with a cup of tea and Sugah!
🙂 Aw, yay! Me too!
Missy, I have one question. Do you sleep? My stars, Girl, how do you do it all? (Well, that’s two questions.) Anyway, I love, love, love this issue of “Cottage Loving!” A few of your major jobs that are my favorites are your brick sidewalk, the hardwood floors, your kitchen cabinets and the beautiful beadboard backsplash.
I can’t wait to try your Freakin’ Good Zucchini Bread. As soon as the stores open, I’ll be buying zucchini for the first time ever. And I’ve got to try “Hello Fresh.” Thanks so much for the review.
And one last thing… I must compliment you on all of your beautiful centerpieces. The white azaleas look amazing!
Thanks so much for sending me “Cottage Loving.” Can’t wait until the next issue..
Frances, thank you so much for reading and for your comments! It means the world to me! To answer your question…yes, I do sleep. 😉 I love sleep. Hahaha! I\’m definitely a 9-hour a night kind of sleeper. It makes me really happy that you not only read my posts, but that you enjoy them. 😀 Let me know when you try the zucchini bread. It\’s definitely been a favorite at our house. Looking forward to sharing more here on CL. – Missy
Well, I’m glad you get some sleep, but I don’t know how you get everything done!
The zucchini bread was great! My brother saw me shredding the zucchini and asked, “Who do think will eat all that vegetable stuff?” He was horrified when I told him it was going in the bread. After the loaves came out of the oven, I had two small slices and loved it. The rest of an entire loaf disappeared that afternoon. There were two telltale crumbs on his shirt. I froze the other loaf before he could devour it. Thanks, Missy, for a fantastic recipe.
By the way, I only had whole wheat flour. I was so surprised when the loaves came out moist and tasty. Next time I’ll have the right kind of flour, and I think I’ll add the cinnamon like you suggested!
